The factory was officially established in 1921. It was first named Wuzhou Gubenzao Pharmaceutical Factory, and later renamed Wuzhou Second Pharmaceutical Factory and renamed Wuzhou Pharmaceutical Factory. Formerly known as Shanghai No. 5 Pharmaceutical Factory.

In 1989, the company was promoted to a national second-level enterprise. Now it is a high-tech enterprise in Shanghai.

In May 1995, the company was included in the first batch of modern enterprise system pilot enterprises by the Shanghai Municipal Government.

On September 16, 1996, the company was restructured into a wholly state-owned Shanghai Wuzhou Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

On April 28, 2001, Shanghai Wuzhou Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. was founded. The company has always attached great importance to winning the trust of customers with superior product quality.

The Wuzhou brand registered in 1912 enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad.

Since entering the market economy and implementing reform and opening up, the company has actively developed cooperative relationships with domestic and foreign scientific research institutions, and established various cooperative relationships with large companies in the Americas, Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia.

The company’s product rifampicin won the National Gold Medal twice, and doxycycline won the National Silver Medal. Metamizole, isoniazid, aminopyrine and ethambutol were awarded the title of high-quality products by the State Administration of Medicine and Shanghai respectively.

In 1997, with sales revenue of 140.88 million yuan, the company was ranked 476th in the "1997 Shanghai Top 500 Industrial Enterprises by Sales Revenue" by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Statistics and Shanghai Modern Statistics Industry Development Center. And it was announced in the Liberation Daily that it has entered the top 500 industrial enterprises in Shanghai.

In June 1999, the company's cefradine product won the Outstanding Achievement Award at the 1999 International Chemical Industry Science and Technology Achievement Expo and Achievement Promotion Conference jointly organized by the Hong Kong International Chemical Industry Association and the Singapore Chemical Industry Association.

The company has the right to import and export products by itself. The main products are mainly exported, with annual export earnings exceeding US$12 million. The company's main products, doxycycline and metamizole, are popular in the international market.
